Google is partnering with RapidSOS to enable users to contact 911 through Rich Communication Services

Google and RapidSOS announced that the companies will begin gradually rolling out RCS (Rich Communication Services) based text-to 911 to emergency call centers across the U.S. this winter.

Google’s new feature will help users who are stuck in areas where they might not be able to get in touch with emergency services through call or text. As this feature is based on RCS, which enables rich messaging and media support, users can send pictures and videos to emergency services for better context.

U.S. Federal Communications Commission data indicates only 53 percent of U.S. 911 centers can receive a text message.

RCS based text-to 911 will be made available at no cost to every 911 agency across the United States. Rich Communication Services (RCS) is a modern, IP-based messaging service based on the Global System for Mobile Communications Association's universal RCS profile.
